I gave up complaining for Lent.

Then, two weeks before Cohort 16 started, my nanny quit.

I wanted to cry. Or call my parents. Or launch into a full internal monologue about how the timing was so bad, how I had too much to do, how this always seems to happen when I’m already stretched.

Instead, I went for a run.

It didn’t fix anything. When I got back, my nanny had still quit. Cohort 16 was still two weeks away. I still needed childcare. I was still frustrated.

But I had given up complaining for Lent, and this was the test.

So I did what I thought I was supposed to do. I kept my mouth shut.

I didn’t rant. I didn’t vent. I didn’t call a friend and spiral. I wasn’t saying any of it out loud, which, in my mind, meant I was passing.

Except I wasn’t.

Because the frustration was still there. It was in my body. In my tone. In the way I was moving through the house like everything was slightly harder than it needed to be.

At one point Jon looked at me and said, ā€œYou’ve been acting annoyed.ā€

And he was right.

That was the moment I realized I had misunderstood the assignment.

Not complaining wasn’t just about not saying the thing. It wasn’t just about trying to look composed on the outside while internally running the same script. Because apparently you can keep the complaint in your mouth and still let it fill the room.

I wasn’t venting, but I was still indulging the feeling. I was still letting it set the emotional temperature. I was still giving my power to the circumstance, just more quietly.

And once I saw that, something clicked.

Complaining says, ā€œI can’t do anything about this, but I don’t like it.ā€

A request says, ā€œCan you please do something about this?ā€

That’s the difference. That’s the whole difference.

The situation hadn’t changed. I still needed help. I still needed a nanny. I still had a cohort starting in two weeks. But instead of stewing in the unfairness of it, I started asking for what I actually needed.

I asked my mom to help with the childcare overlap. I asked Jon to help me search Care.com for new nannies. I followed the thread that could move things forward instead of feeding the one that kept me stuck.

And the shift was wild.

Not because life suddenly became easy. It didn’t. But because I could feel the difference between sitting in frustration and directing it.

That’s when I realized this is basically what prayer is too.

Prayer is asking.

That’s it.

You have to knock.

You have to ask.

Sometimes the answer comes through people. Through timing. Through opportunities. Through the very ordinary thing that doesn’t look dramatic enough to count as divine intervention until you realize it was exactly what you needed.

But complaining closes you off to all of that. It keeps you in the energy of this is wrong, this shouldn’t be happening, I’m stuck. A request opens something. It says maybe there is a way through this. Maybe someone can help. Maybe I’m allowed to ask.

I think a lot of women were taught not to do that. We were taught to be accommodating, to be easy, to not need too much. So instead of asking clearly, we hint. We wait. We hope someone notices. And when they don’t, we get resentful.

But that’s not power.

Power is knowing what you need and saying it.

Power is knocking on the door.

So that’s my invitation to you.

The next time you catch yourself complaining, out loud or in your head, pause and ask: what do I actually want here? And who can I ask for it?

Turn the complaint into a request.

Knock.
