Last week our jade plant flowered.

If you’ve never seen one bloom, that’s because it’s rare. Jade plants only flower when they’re thriving. In Feng Shui, they symbolize prosperity and alignment. A bloom is considered a sign you’re entering a new season of abundance.

We bought it from the farmer’s market months ago. It was in bad shape. We brought it home and placed it outside on our porch.

It's easy to believe there's no such thing as being in the right place. That with enough hard work, grit, and luck, you can make it anywhere. And maybe that's true. But there are also places that make it easier to do the work, easier to put in those extra hours, easier for you to bloom.

Recently, we decided to spend more time next year living close to my family. Although we were committed, we still had doubts about leaving New York.

Then, we spent Thanksgiving with Jon's parents. Watching them with Summer reminded us what it feels like to have an extra pair of hands. Now that both Jon and I are entrepreneurs, even one extra hour makes a difference. Having someone else there to help meant we could take a few extra moments to focus on our work, to be present with each other, to breathe.

In that same week, our jade plant flowered, and we finally found subletters to take over our New York lease.

It was a sigh of relief.

These small signs make me feel like we're moving in the right direction. That moving out of New York to live near my parents for half the year is the place where Jon, Summer, and I need to be in order to bloom.

Women in particular are inundated with messages about empowerment that conflate independence with not asking for help. My parents didn't live close to their parents. Most people I know don't live close to theirs. We're taught that being the CEO of your life means doing it alone.

But no one does anything alone. You can be the CEO of your life and get support from your family.

When I'm with my parents, time freezes. My mom cooks my favorite breakfast. Sometimes I spent the whole day in my pyjamas. Being home feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket.

I've spent ten years in New York saying yes to everything and everyone. That season was about foraging. It was about exploring far and wide to discover the divine purpose of my life.

This next season is about developing that divine purpose.

It’s about cultivation.

Sometimes you need to leave the nest to grow. Then, other times, you return so you can grow into what comes next.

There’s no one place or one way that’s right for everyone.
