I was having my coffee and reading The Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila—getting through the five pages I can manage while Summer Jean self-plays in her pen before she realizes she's alone and calls for me.
Teresa was a 16th-century mystic who gave up everything comfortable to build something that mattered. And this line struck a chord in me: when you witness someone else's blessing, you're witnessing evidence that blessings are real.
I put the book down because I knew exactly why that line hit me.
I'd been doing the thing. You know the thing. Someone announces a win online—a raise, a round, a launch, a life that looks like the one you want—and something small and ugly flickers in your chest. That little voice that whispers, Why them? Why not me?
I hate that voice. But I know her well.

And what Teresa helped me see is that the flinch isn't just ugly—it's expensive. Because if good things aren't a finite resource being distributed to everyone but you, then every blessing you witness is proof that they're available. When someone else gets the thing you want, that's not evidence you've been passed over. That's evidence that the thing you want is possible.
But when you flinch at someone else's win, you're training yourself to associate the very thing you want with pain. You're teaching your body to treat good news as a threat. To brace instead of open. So when success comes knocking—and it will—the door closes.
It's like being a bad gift receiver.
Imagine someone who, every single time you give them a gift, criticizes it. Every time. "Oh, this could have been blue." "It's a little small." "I already have something like this."
How long before you stop giving them gifts?
Not long.
Now imagine that's how you treat every blessing you witness. Someone gets a promotion—you find a reason it doesn't count. Someone's relationship is thriving—you assume it won't last. Someone launches a business and it takes off—you decide they got lucky.
You're criticizing every gift before it even reaches you.

I keep a gratitude jar on my kitchen counter for exactly this reason—one thing a day, written down, to practice staying open instead of bracing. It doesn't fix the flinch. But it reminds me that receiving is a skill.
When a woman wins—when anyone wins the thing you want—that's not the universe rubbing it in. That's the universe saying, there it is again. It's real. It's still available.
Envy is expensive. Don't let it close the door.
Say it if you need to: Thank you for showing me what's possible.

Maggie
