On Friday morning, I came across a tweet that attacked the SheFi community.

When I see something like that, which is more regularly than I’d like to admit, I always get an involuntary physical response.

There’s always fear in that moment: “Oh my gosh. What if this goes viral? What if people feel the same way? Do people think we’re dumb? Are we dumb?”

Getting attacked turns your worldview upside-down if only for a brief second, and makes you question everything. Suddenly, you’re alone.

In that moment I put down my phone and went for a walk, letting the hurt move through me. This was a woman I know. A coworker of mine from my Consensys days. I remember supporting her when one of our male coworkers was treating her poorly.

That made her comment cut more deeply than usual.

And by usual, I mean someone tries to attack SheFi about every 6 months. One woman made an entire YouTube rant about me last year. Another woman went on a LinkedIn diatribe calling me a “malicious extractor” before she was kindly reminded by many, many SheFi alums how positive our program is. There are countless smaller digs, attacks, and criticisms that I’ve had to bear over the years.

I don’t ever respond to insults publicly. I don’t think less of these people. I simply find it sad.

A mentor once told me: “If you try to prove yourself to someone, you’re giving up your power.”

My commitment to myself has always been to stay in my values, rather than changing my values for the situation at hand.

My commitments are to:

• Lead with kindness

• Give people grace

• And be comfortable with being unliked

It’s not every woman’s job on Earth to like SheFi’s mission. In fact, an inevitable part of standing for something is finding out that people dislike what you stand for, even if what you stand for is (in your eyes) positive, necessary, and impactful.

As a founder, I’ve learned that “mean comments” don’t hurt any less now than they did in 2020 when I started SheFi.

The only thing that has changed is that I move through the hurt more quickly. My resilience isn’t immunity to pain, it’s the speed with which I get over it.

If you are building something, know this: you will be tested. Some people will not like you. But it’s not your job to be liked by everyone. It’s your job to be consistent in your commitments, true to your values, and courageous in spirit, even in the most difficult situations.

Our goal at SheFi is to be the kindest corner on the internet. That’s my commitment.

So know that whatever you’re working on, I and the SheFi community are with you.

I see the sad pattern of women tearing down women again and again. And it’s my mission to rewrite the narrative that women need to tear each other down to succeed. If this or something similar has ever happened to someone you know, forward this letter to them.
