As the elevator doors opened on the first floor, I felt the undeniable tremor of a contraction coming on. As the tightening surged, I looked at my doula and said one simple word: “Contraction.”

Throwing myself onto the elevator bars, I vocalized deeply, letting out a powerful “OOOOOHH!” My doula quickly stuck her foot in the elevator door, applying steady pressure to my back as the contraction peaked and my body writhed instinctively.

All of a sudden I heard the building doorman’s familiar voice. Anxious and urgent.

“You can’t do this in here. You can’t stop the elevator. Get out. Stop that!”

He sounded terrified. But his words then faded into the background.

I had made a pact with myself: no person, place, or thing would interrupt the sacred journey of bringing my baby into this world. The labor itself was my guiding star—above social norms, above embarrassment, above everything.

This wasn’t the last time my labor would make people uncomfortable.

Later, at the hospital, another intense contraction overtook me in the lobby. I yelled, “Contraction!” and threw my body over my doula, vocalizing as the wave moved through me.

A small squad of security guards circled, flustered.

“You can’t do this here! STOP!”

But I didn’t stop. I stayed. With the pain. With the power.

Reflecting on these small moments in my labor journey, I realized our culture isn’t just uncomfortable with labor — it’s afraid of women in their full power.

We’re taught to be polished. Pleasant. Put together.

But birth – and maybe as an extension, womanhood itself – is not that.

Birth is raw. It’s loud. It’s messy. It’s primal. It doesn’t have a target or a victim or an object, other than itself. It’s pure power – not directed at anything but itself.

And when a woman shows up in her full power in public, it challenges everything we’ve been told is “acceptable.” It makes people squirm. It disrupts the script.

But here’s the truth:

The world needs our power and our strength, now more than ever.

And this power? It lives in all of us.

Labor isn’t something to hide. Womanhood isn’t something to hide. Our most primal, animalistic, and powerful selves are not meant to be hidden.

Our power is meant to be honored.

And when we stop performing, stop pretending, and start embodying, we don’t just bring life into the world — we remind the world who we truly are.
