Sun poured through the window and landed on the glass table between us. I sipped my coffee. Summer babbled happily on the rug. Jon's hands waved in and out of the sunlight while he spoke about the importance of identifying your values, defining them, and instilling them into everything you do. Especially your business.

"What are the values that made you successful?" His hands returned to his own coffee mug.

One unanticipated benefit of having Jon at home more often (he left his private venture job to commit full-time to the communications firm he started, fortyIQ) is that I have my number one coach, mentor and cheerleader literally in my corner. Throughout the day, Jon and I coach each other on how to improve our respective businesses, hyping each other up to sweeten the path.

I looked down, tracking the slanted shape the light made in the glass, and spoke at length about the many values that drive me. Jon asked hard questions. We refined. And finally, we arrived at three words:

Ambition. Craft. Agency.

Ambition

Ambition means striving to be the absolute best I can be. I'm ambitious for excellence. For making whatever has my name on it exceptional.

My first year at IBM, I was the number one consultant in my class. Not because I was the smartest or most talented, but because I was the most relentless. I took on the biggest sales deals, worked on weekends, and called partners again and again to get a deal done until they'd jokingly say, "Oh, it's you again…"

That same ambition shows up everywhere. SheFi Summit at EthCC Paris 2023. We had a few signups for our event, but I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted 200 people to show up, not 20. You know what I did? I DM’d every single woman I could find in the EthCC Telegram chat. I got reported on Telegram for spamming. Twice.

That's the difference between "I've done the job" and true ambition. Ambition is that step beyond. When I'm invested, I do whatever it takes.

Craft

My ambition for excellence drives me to constantly hone my craft.

Craft is dedication to a specific skill. The constant pursuit of getting better. I'm always thinking: How can I be a better teacher? Tell a better story? Make the next SheFi cohort even better? SheFi Season 15 is better than Season 1, and I know that Season 150 will be even better.

I'm always open to feedback. Even when it's hard to hear. I'm lucky to have a partner who helps me refine my craft. We do this for each other. Always understanding that honing your craft is the pursuit of a lifetime.

And I take inspiration from everywhere. Even in a workout class, I’m watching how the instructor commands attention, builds trust, and energizes the room, thinking about how I might improve the SheFi experience. 

Agency

Agency is the engine that keeps me going.

It's the belief that I can truly do anything. It's the revolutionary in me that won't be boxed in by any notions of what my career is "supposed” to look like.

Part of it comes from my consulting days when I, at 23 years old, had to tell older and more experienced business executives how to fix their businesses. It's uncomfortable, but you have to show up in your little suit and do it anyway. Every day.

Agency is about not letting imposter syndrome stop you. I taught myself AI. I taught myself crypto and DeFi. And now I'm teaching myself business.

The previous company I founded went under right before we were supposed to go public. That moment, the loudest voice in my head, louder than any feelings of disappointment, was the voice that said, "You got yourself here. You can get yourself much further."

If you're part of SheFi, you belong to a community that lives and breathes these values. We're here to support every woman's ambition, craft, and agency. And you live these values every time you show up, learn something new, or lift another woman up. 

So here’s my question for you: What are the three values that make you successful?

Sit with them. Define them. Then share them on X. 

Post a picture of something you’ve achieved, personal or professional, big or small, anything we can celebrate with you to investing in your first DeFi protocol, buying a new favorite shirt, getting a promotion, taking a break when you needed one, attending class, giving yourself grace for missing class, you the picture.
