It was 2017, and I was in the office working late on a project with a male coworker.

A senior female coworker came up and said to him, "Oh, I've been looking for you."

Then she pinched my cheek, shook it, and said, "Shoo, shoo. You wouldn't understand this conversation."

They left the room. I stood there, in shock. I had never met this woman before, but she was supposed to be someone I could look up to at the company.

Whether it was because of my youth, my naiveté, or my bubbly personality, this woman did not take me seriously. By putting me down, I can only assume she was attempting to put me in my place, and better secure hers at the top.

In that moment, I was faced with two choices:

1) Accept that this is the way the world works. That in a patriarchal society, women are in constant competition, and there’s only so much room for one to succeed.

2) Reject this ideology, instead proving that through kindness, mutual support, and community, we can all succeed.

I chose the latter.

In 2019, when I created SheFi, this startling interaction deeply informed the behaviors I didn’t want in our community. The idea that you have to shove elbows to be the one woman with a seat at the table didn’t resonate with me. Why don’t we make the table big enough for everyone?

I wanted to make SheFi a community where you never have to put someone down to get ahead. I believed that lifting up those around you will help everyone go farther.

Reflecting on my anti-values allowed me to establish SheFi’s values, which include kindness, curiosity, and collaboration. I made sure to put them in large font on the SheFi website to attract likeminded individuals. As we’ve grown to 7,000 members, we’ve maintained these values.

Many believe that to succeed in a career you must step on others in favor of yourself, but SheFi’s success proves them wrong. We don’t have a scarcity mindset. We applaud each other’s victories and support each other’s journeys.

After all, crypto is decentralized. We’re removing hierarchies to create the world we want to see. We’re not perpetuating a future where getting your cheeks pinched is “just the way things are.”

And remember, if anyone makes you think the table is small - you’re always welcome at ours.

DeFi Studio Art Contest Goes Live

This October, RARI Chain, Refraction DAO, the HUG, SheFi, and curation team Aniko Berman & Justin Gilanyi of Codex Projects are partnering to offer a Web3 artist contest to drive awareness and earning opportunities for creators and collectors alike.
