What do you do when someone calls your character into question?

It was 2018, and I had rented an apartment out in Venice Beach, Los Angeles to work on an epic sci-fi movie series for a blockchain project. The director was iconic storyboard artist Iain McCaig, known for the character design of Darth Maul and Padme Amidala.

The task: create four short films for the blockchain universe we were building, Cellarius, with a one million dollar budget. Cellarius was a fan driven science fiction about the rise of the first sentient AI in 2084, powered by Ethereum.

I was beyond excited to work on these films for our sci-fi blockchain universe.

But after just a few months in LA, the project and my character was called into question.

When I realized our budget wouldn't work with our current production company, I felt it was my fiduciary responsibility to advise a change of course. Iain and my teammates agreed, and we decided to part ways with the production company. We knew it was necessary to keep the project alive.

A few days later, I woke up to an shocking email from two male colleagues. They were attacking my character based on false information they had received from the recently let go production company. Rather than talking to me to get the full picture, these two teammates on the other side of the country in New York decided that I was the problem.

Before I knew it, I was on trial. During a meeting to decide my fate, I defended myself to all of Consensys leadership, including CEO Joe Lubin. Throughout my career, my character had never been challenged before. But now I had to dispel what were mostly personal attacks from the two male colleagues. It was one of the most stressful days of my life.

No matter what, I reminded myself, I could fall back on this: I made the decision that was in the best interest of the project. And I met the personal attacks with grace rather than retaliation. I would not slander anyone, not even those doing the same to me. Instead, I stuck to the facts.

By the end of the long tribunal, Consensys leadership found that I hadn’t done anything wrong. The two men who attacked me were asked to leave the team, and I was completely in the clear.

Unfortunately, at the same time, it was also decided to put the four sci-fi movies on hold indefinitely. I left LA and came back home to NYC.

While standing up for myself during that time was incredibly harrowing – I could barely sleep or eat the days leading up to my trial – it was undeniably worth it.

No matter what, there will be people that disagree with the decisions you make. They may approach you with hatred or animosity. They may troll you online or put you on trial. But what’s important is that you believe you’ve made the right decision.

And what do you do when someone calls your character into question?

You believe in yourself. And you take the high road.

• 💰$356M daily volume on Base (a 51% surge in just one day)
