Why I Named Her Summer Jeanne.

A love letter to my Nana. Plus, a SheFi Twitter Spaces, crypto news + events.

✨ Sign up for Season 14! ✨

I named my daughter after my Nana.

She was one of the most joyful, radiant people I’ve ever known—and remembering her recently brought to mind a story that changed me.

My Nana grew up without a father. Later in life, she raised my mom and her two brothers as a single, working mother. Through it all, she led with laughter, resilience, and a phrase she often said:

“Bloom where you’re planted.”

And she did—at every stage of her life.

In her 70s, she met Wayne—a tall gentleman from church with a red car and a heart to match. Their love was obvious and rare. People would stop them and say,

“I’m 35, and my husband doesn’t even look at me like that. How do you keep the love alive?”

And in Wayne, I think she finally found the kind of love that held, protected, and celebrated her. Eventually, they got married.

Then everything changed.

In 2009, my Nana had a stroke.

She was playing bridge and suddenly collapsed. She had an emergency brain surgery and was given a 5% chance of survival. But my Nana had grit. She survived, but her memory and independence did not return.

I still remember my first visit to see her in the nursing home during my freshman year of college. She was anxious and foggy, unable to recognize where she was or who we were.

But she always knew Wayne.

The second he walked into the room, she would relax. Every time.

He walked us through her care like it was a project of devotion. How he visited twice a day, every single day. How he made sure she got outside. How he snuck in her favorite Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies. How he cleaned the dirt from under her nails and combed her hair. How he booked her beauty appointments. How it upset him when she wasn’t dressed in her own clothes.

When she became agitated, Wayne would pause, kneel beside her, and whisper:

“I’m here for you, babe. I’m never going to leave you. I love you.”

And she would calm instantly.

He did this not for weeks or months, but for nine whole years.

365 days a year.

Through holidays. Through heartache. Through decline.

He showed up with no expectation of recognition or reward, because by then, Nana couldn’t give him much in return.

But somehow, she felt his love. And she responded to it.

Watching Wayne taught me more than any leadership book or classroom ever could.

It reminded me of what it really means to serve.

To show up for someone not because you’ll get something back—but simply because you care.

And that’s what I hope we’re building at SheFi.

A community where we show up for each other.

Where we push open doors, make space, and lend a hand—not because we expect anything in return, but because we believe in one another. Because we care.

So that everyone can bloom where they are planted.

My Nana passed away in 2018 with Wayne at her side. Wayne is still alive and brings flowers to her tombstone regularly, making sure it is clean and cared for.

Blooming where you’re planted isn’t about being passive.

It’s about being rooted in love and choosing to grow in service to those around you.

My Nana and Wayne taught me that, and I carry their example with me every day.

Find us at Berlin Blockchain Week! 🫧

Our incredibly talented SheFi Chapter Leads in Berlin are hosting a fantastic event on June 16: Build Beyond the Bubble!

What will be discussed? 🤔

Well, most crypto professionals exist inside a bubble, fighting for attention and marketing to each other.

In a world facing systemic challenges, it’s never been more important to ask: What kind of future are we building, and who else can help us shape it?

This event is about bursting that bubble — about learning how to communicate the power and potential of web3 to people outside our echo chamber and building something that matters.

Whether you're deep in crypto, web3-curious, or bringing wisdom from adjacent industries, you’ll be in the right place.

It'll be a one-of-a-kind gathering with talent from across and beyond the web3 space. There are already over 300 signups! 🔥

Don't miss out. Register now!

And if you’d like take a breather from the conference chaos, sign up for Breathe. Brunch. Blockchain.
