You’ll Never Live This Moment Again.
The Power of Presence: ichi-go ichi-e. SheFi Summit this Sunday

In just a few days we'll be together at SheFi Summit.
Maybe this is the first time you've ventured so far.
Maybe you're used to travelling across the globe.
Maybe it’s your first conference. Maybe it’s your tenth.
Maybe you know tons of people there.
Maybe you don’t know anyone.
No matter where you're at, I invite you to practice ichi-go ichi-e: one time, one meeting at this event.
It's a Japanese concept that describes the practice of being present for each moment because it will never exist exactly this way ever again and therefore, you will never exist exactly in this way ever again.
A few years ago, before Summer, before Jon, I went on my first solo vacation. During Devcon 2019 in Japan, I spent a few extra weeks exploring the country on my own.
One afternoon in Kyoto, after biking across the city, I sat near the Golden Temple, the taste of the black sesame ice cream I’d eaten earlier still on my tongue. The sun gleaming across the water. The hum of tourists. The hushed breeze through the leaves. A quiet knowing that this is exactly where I was supposed to be.
I didn't know about ichi-go ichi-e back then. I just knew that when I trusted my instincts and stayed in the moment, the answers came. The right next step revealed itself.
That same night, I took a train an hour away to a restaurant that I was told I couldn't leave Japan without trying. When I arrived, the manager kindly told me they couldn't accommodate me due to a private party that evening.
I listened to the manager. I listened to the voice inside me. I had come all this way. I wasn't going to be here ever again. Not wanting to be rude but wanting to honor what was alive in me, I insisted: wasn't there anything they could do?
My conviction surprised him. He said nothing but gestured at me to wait. He disappeared into the restaurant for a few minutes and then returned.
Could I eat quickly?
Yes. Yes I could.
He sat me at the bar where the restaurant staff had arranged a single table setting. I marveled at the white cloth napkin, intricately folded.
I ended up staying until the restaurant closed. The owner and I chatted about his plans to visit the United States and the dinner party guests, seated at a table nearby, loved shouting “kampai!” and knocking glasses with a friendly foreigner.
A few years later, I learned about ichi-go ichi-e while reading Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering. Priya Parker uses this concept to describe one of her core beliefs about gatherings–that they are once in a lifetime moments and in order to be experienced to their fullest, they require that people are present, body, mind, and soul.
It all clicked.
My trip to Japan felt like I experienced a society that puts tremendous care into everything that it does. Attention to details begets attention to greater things. The more attention I paid in every moment, the more I knew what to do.
Which led me to understand this: when we meet each other with absolute presence, a divine plan unfolds. Presence is a constant practice. The more present we are, the more the plan reveals itself.
Ichi-go, Ichi-e is such a hallmark of what I believe in, that I ended up tattooing the phrase on the inside of my arm (a story for another time!).
It’s a small reminder to live my life as if each moment is a once in a lifetime meeting.
Because it is.
Whatever you are living right now, it will never happen again.
So let's make the most of it.
